It was my favorite duty on the farm growing up, because calves are the cutest. But, it’s also one of the most difficult jobs. Calves are very fragile, especially in the winter months.
Their immune systems are still developing so we keep them in individual stalls so they can’t spread germs with each other. It’s also essential to monitor them every day and night to make sure they’re eating and drinking enough. We check their poop to make sure it’s regular and evaluate them for any other health changes.
They stay in these individual pens until they’re about 8 weeks old and weaned off of milk. From there they move into group pens to make friends. Do you have any questions about calves?
